Weston Youth Orchestra was formed in 1958 with the aim of providing a setting for young musicians to develop their orchestral skills. Dennis Cole, the orchestra's first leader, became its director in 1966 and in 2009 was awarded the MBE for his work with music in the local community.
THE ORCHESTRA TODAY
Rehearsals take place on Friday evenings throughout the year at the Boulevard United Reformed Church in the heart of Weston-super-Mare. Our membership ranges from grade 2 to grade 8 and ages from 8 to 21.
A team of local professional musicians help coach and mentor the orchestra on a weekly basis.
Rehearsals are not just a time to enjoy music making, but a time to make new friends who have common interests.
We usually perform around four concerts each year both within Weston-super-Mare and other local communities. Recent concert venues have included Weston Playhouse, the Boulevard United Reformed Church and the Princess Theatre, Burnham-on-Sea.
Our concert repertoire is taken from our library containing over 500 works and ranges from popular classical standards to film scores and selections from well-known musicals. Members with a high standard of performance are also encouraged to perform as soloists.
